Spiritual Investments in Cuba<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I first went to Florida in Cuba 6 years ago.  The Pastor, Charles, had only been there for a month.  The church was 98 years old but stagnant.  It had a single mission church that was 14 years old and had never grown.  Many people thought they should close it down.  Nevertheless, God had a plan and a future for them.  God was going to revitalize the church and expand its ministry throughout the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I met Pastor Charles and his family, Saida, Zuri and Emmanuel somewhat by accident.  I was supposed to go to a different city and meet a different pastor.  However, God sent me to Florida to be a link between the church in Florida and Evangel.  In the years that followed, we developed wonderful friendships and ministry partnership.  The first story was a miracle.  Looking back, it was a sign that God was going to do many amazing things through us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pastor Charles asked if I could bring musical instruments for his church to start a music school & worship ministry.  I had no confidence that I could find instruments but I said I would try.  In time we supplied trumpets, trombones, clarinets, recorders, flutes, a violin, and a guitar.  All these were donated by many people.  I was amazed at how God provided and answered our prayers.  Since then, the church has developed a music school and a worship training academy.  More importantly, God used the        instruments and the school to change the faith of the people in the church.  They moved from “God doesn’t do much, and neither do we” to “Maybe God can do miracles, and God is at work in our city.” <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next project was to buy back a house in the north end of Florida.  The church started in that house, but it was sold years earlier.  It fell into disrepair but was available for purchase.  This was important because churches can’t own property.  As this house was formerly used as a church, it could be designated as a church again.  It was also in a key location on the other end of the town.  It would cost $6000 US to buy, and another $4000 to renovate.  Pastor Charles asked if we could help.  Again, without much confidence, I said I would try.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I shared this with people at Evangel, and they gave money to buy and fix the building.  In hindsight, it was easy.  At the time I was stressed, wanting to help but watching the exchange rate fell as we waited for the funds to be transferred to Cuba, hoping there would still be enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following summer we were in Florida when Pastor Antonio and his family moved from the other end of Cuba to come as the pastor.  The house was in terrible shape.  Terrible!  I remember what Peony said when we met Antonio and saw the house:  “I can’t believe they would live in this terrible house so that they can serve God here.”  We cried as we prayed for them, understanding the sacrifice this family was making.  But Antonio, Melides, Adrian and Jesus have been faithful, serving God,   working jobs to pay the bills, and renovating the building as they went.  They now have worship every week and a full range of ministries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about the mission church, the one many people thought they should close down?  It met in La Curva, a suburb of Florida, in a dilapidated old house.  It started to grow.  A year after our first trip, they constituted as their own church and called their own pastor.  Their vision?  Buy a newer house in the area to meet and be able to grow.  I toured the house they hoped to purchase on my last trip there.  Again, people at Evangel gave, and they were able to purchase the house.  This summer they held Vacation Bible School in the new house and 60 children came.  The ministry is alive and well!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about the old house in La Curva?  I assumed they would sell it to help fund the new house.  No, absolutely not.  They kept it – so now there are 4 properties belonging to the church, 4 growing churches and church plants. The church continually starts mission stations for future church starts. Their dream is to start a new church every year. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still talk with Pastor Charles and his family. Facebook has hit Cuba recently, so I can see the pictures of the people and chat occasionally.  My heart is still very much with them.  For the last two summers I’ve been unable to go see them.  Now I dream of taking a group of young people from Sunchild to Cuba with me to meet the Cuba church and learn from them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of the focus of the church in Florida has been on the youth and young adults.  Pastor Charles had two teenagers when he moved there, Zuri was 17 and    Emmanuel was 15.  He believed that youth were key to revitalizing the church.  Now youth lead worship, teach Sunday School, lead VBS, and are key in most of the ministries in the church.  They love being together and love Jesus.  Many will become missionaries and pastors in time, and the work of God will be multiplied through them.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pastor Charles and Saida dream of  being overseas missionaries. They hope to go to Africa for a year to serve Jesus.  I believe Cubans will lead the world in missions in the coming decade. They have been   seasoned by having no money, little resources, and few buildings, but deep in prayer and passionate about evangelism.  I think a Cuban missionary could go anywhere in the world with no money and no support to start a church.  They have done it again and again already in Cuba.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, I share my prayer requests with Pastor Charles.  He is very much a hero for me, a role model.  When I first met him, he moved with his wife and two teenaged  children to a church where everyone said ministry was hard.  He boldly and faithfully served God.  God did miracles in front of him.  I don’t pretend to be half as capable as Pastor Charles, but I am trying to follow in his rather large footsteps.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evangel, you have done well in supporting missions in Cuba, both in Florida and in all the trips with Pastor Roland & Shirley.  Your giving has been multiplied by God,  and the investment paid dividends.  The power and passion of God is known in Florida.  The church is alive and growing, expanding and multiplying.  Imagine the  impact it will have in another 10 or 20 years?  Only God knows. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was honoured to be a part of your work.  A small piece but a key link in the relationship.  Your prayers and gifts often flowed through me.  People always thanked me for what happened.  In fact I was merely a delivery boy but receiving the thanks for what was actually not mine.  I experienced unbelievable joy in my part. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
